Confidence, Control,
Family
One of the most important goals of Caroline House is to break
down the barriers of social and physical isolation that have historically
kept poor women from building better lives. Most of the women served
by Caroline House are between 25-45 years old. They have immigrated
to the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala,
Honduras, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
Even though there are many different countries represented, our women
form themselves into a supportive community to help each other. If such
a self-help attitude and network can take root at Caroline House, we
believe there is no end to the creative solutions and reservoir of talent
and commitment that might be tapped for the benefit of all participants,
past, current and future.
For example, shared living
and childcare arrangements might be devised as a solution to some
women’s problems; information on jobs, transportation,
and childcare resources might be helpful to others. A sense of loyalty
to the program and to all whom it encompasses can lead women to reach
out to one another and to broaden and enrich the Caroline House program
and its mission in ways we can only imagine. It is this spirit of
Caroline
House that will enable the program and services provided to survive
changes in staff, activities, and outcomes in future years that will
ensure the continuation of the Caroline House.
