Confidence / Empowerment
For poor women from another country and culture, mastering the
English language adequately, within their own neighborhood and without
the worry of who will care for their preschool children, is an achievement
whose impact on their lives cannot be overestimated.
It gives them entrée to jobs and the ability to conduct simple
commerce. It makes it possible for them to communicate with teachers,
medical staff, and other caregivers about their children’s problems
and progress. Learning English gives our women the most basic tool they
will need – the ability to communicate – to even consider
other job or educational options for themselves and their children.
In short, the programs of Caroline House give poor immigrant women the
one thing they most need – CONFIDENCE! This leads to empowerment,
which enables the first critical step to be made on a long journey
that
will take them, hopefully, far beyond Caroline House to a better, more
secure and productive life for themselves and their children.
