The Case for
.Caroline
House
Caroline House, an educational center for immigrant women and preschool
children, was founded in 1995 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in
response to a direct need. It welcomes all women without regard to race,
religion, or ethnic background and is located in one of the poorest
areas of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Our mission is to provide, tuition free,
opportunities to develop the whole person through education and support
services. We teach English as a Second Language, basic computer and life
skills to enable women to adjust to life in a new culture and to become
educated, productive members of society. Classes are held 4 days a week
from 9:00 - 1:30. Special enrichment programs which address issues such
as financial management, parenting skills, health issues, violence and
safety issues are provided on Fridays and every 1st Wednesday of the month.
The women view Caroline House as a safe, peaceful haven where they are able
to learn, make friends, and receive assistance for a multitude of issues.
Their pre-school children attend a state-of-the-art on-site pre-school
program while their mothers attend classes. This prepares the children
for successful entry into an English speaking kindergarten.
